Ecuador

At an altitude of almost 3000 metres lies the Latin American Capital of Culture 2011 and at the same time the highest capital in the world: Quito. In narrow alleys, the city lies on seemingly high, mostly green hills, but once you look around, you immediately feel tiny. In the background, the huge, white-covered Andes, over 5,000 metres high, rise almost to the very top of the sky. This makes you understand why Quito, which is also a World Heritage Site, is such a special city, where myth and reality merge in such a fascinating way like nowhere else. On the one hand, people are extremely correct and friendly, even at very late hours; on the other hand, the dancers in bars seem like they've come from a dream - from which one, it's impossible to define...

True to the motto small but mighty, the animal paradise of the world par excellence also belongs here: the Galapagos Islands. They are located a few hundred kilometres off the mainland in the Pacific Ocean, at about the height of the equator. Almost 100% of the archipelago is strictly protected, which is precisely why the most exotic animal species can be experienced here up close in their natural environment. The archipelago, consisting of a total of 13 islands, is actually called the Colón Archipelago, after its discoverer Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón). Five of them are inhabited; there are roads only on four of them. Two of the most central islands have an airport that can be used to reach the islands from the mainland; on the islands you can get around on foot, by bicycle or by boat and plane. The main attraction of Galapagos is of course the animals, first and foremost the giant tortoise, as well as a few other mammal species, countless reptile and bird species, fish of all varieties and the Galapagos penguin. To experience this landscape so paradisiacal and untouched is a real adventure!

A visit to the small Andean town of Cuenca, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also unforgettable. Its colonial architectural style combined with the resilient friendliness of the inhabitants make Cuenca the most important and beautiful city in Ecuador after Quito (although the inhabitants often disagree). Cuenca is known for its countless handicrafts with ceramics, fabrics, metals and and and... Even the famous Panama hat comes - contrary to the most obvious assumption - from here. Accordingly, the city is traditional and colourful and one has the feeling of travelling back in time a little.
