Lithuania

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, stands out as the only European capital on the border of two cultures: the Latin and the Byzantine. Walking through the Old Town, one encounters numerous buildings from different eras and feels first-hand the course of history that has been experienced here. Vilnius Old Town has therefore been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 to protect the narrow alleys with hidden backyards and old medieval castles. However, visitors can not only discover history here, in more modern parts of the city business life pulsates, here the future becomes the present.

A very special spot of nature in Lithuania is the Curonian Spit. The national park, which lies between two rivers, belongs partly to Russia and partly to Lithuania, where it is a popular tourist destination. The nature of the Curonian Spit is absolutely unique and is also called the East Prussian Sahara. For the most part, the landscape consists of huge dunes along the coast. Legend has it that a giantess brought the sand there in her apron and poured it out to protect the Cures from a sea god. So it is almost a matter of course that UNESCO has also included this place in the World Heritage List.

Another flagship of the largest Baltic state is the moated castle of Trakai. It is said to be the most photographed place in the entire Baltic region - and rightly so! Surrounded by picturesque nature, the castle complex from the late Middle Ages lies in the middle of a lake and thus offers a beautiful panorama. If you can tear yourself away from this sight, the small town also offers a lot of architectural and cultural sights, after all it is the historical capital of the country. A visit to the city can also be easily planned as a day trip from Vilnius, as there are only 30 kilometres between the cities.
