Chile

Awe-inspiring volcanoes, lakes, fjords, thunderous waterfalls and wondrous ice landscapes: the wonders of Chile's nature need to be experienced to be believed. Its geography is characterised by its elongated shape, making it one of the world’s most geographically unique countries. Its capital Santiago de Chile is a modern city with an old part packed with history and top hotels, making even the most discerning client happy. Untamed nature and gigantic, lonely glacier landscapes are what makes Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego so fascinating. Also part of Chile are the Juan Fernandez islands and the famous Easter islands with their mysterious stone sculptures. If you would like to experience something extraordinary, why not stay overnight in the Explora hotel in Torres del Paine - the glaciers surrounding the hotel will knock you off your feet! If you would like to combine Chile, we highly recommend doing this with Argentina, Bolivia or Peru.

Santiago de Chile is the capital of Chile. 16 million people live here which is about a third of the Chilean population. The huge city lies in a valley between the Pacific and the Andes and that is the reason why this city looks amazing no matter from which side you look at it. The most impressive panoramic view can be had from the mountains Cerro San Cristóbal or Cerro Santa Lucía – calling it picturesque does not even come close! Even in the city there are many things to be seen such as the National History Museum on the Plaza de Armas where you can also find the impressive cathedral Iglesia San Francisco. Shop till you drop on one of the avenues in the quarter Providencia! An absolute must-see during a trip to Chile is the Atacama desert which spreads along the Pacific coast over 1000 kilometres from North to South. This desert is said to be the driest on earth, in some areas there has not been a drop of rain in decades. El nino brings a lot of rain every 5 to 10 years, turning the Atacama desert into a stunningly beautiful flower desert with more than 200 different species. Start your trip to the desert in San Pedro de Atacama. From here you can proceed to Salar de Atacama, a salt desert with a lake in the middle where flamingoes gather! Or you can go to the geyser field El Tatio or to the Valle de La Luna; this place got its name from the unique landscape that resembles that on the moon.

In the very south of Chile lies Patagonia. The Andes divide this region into East Patagonia (mostly Argentinian) and West Patagonia in Chile. Humans are rare hereand nature is still raw and wild! Animals like the condor, the nandu or the guanako thrive in this area. The Chilean part of patagonia is dominated by the rain forest. The national park Torres del Paine was established in 1959. In the north end of the park there is another national park, Los Glacieres which lies in Argentina. This park was named a UNESCO world heritage site. Travellers who would like to explore the glaciers of Patagonia are therefore encouraged to combine Chile with a trip to Argentina!
