A boat leaves a quiet trail through the archipelago, the aroma of fika wafts through Stockholm – and somewhere further north, the evening light shimmers over tranquil lakes. Since 1998, V.O.S has been capturing these images and turning them into travel experiences that appeal to both the heart and the head.

For visitors, Sweden is a country of many possibilities: from the Arctic beauty of the north with its midnight sun to the castles of the southernmost province of Skåne with their more continental flair. Visitors to northern Sweden can experience the icy delights of dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling and much more. Further south, visitors can explore the 1,680-mile coastline with its tens of thousands of islands. Stockholm, Sweden's beautiful capital, is known as the ‘beauty on the water’, but it is also a city of fashion, design and trends.

Sweden – a land of contrasts, tranquillity and vastness

Sweden stretches over more than 1,500 kilometres from north to south; an elongated country that extends from the Arctic Circle to the Baltic Sea. It is the third largest country in Western Europe, but with only 10 million inhabitants, it is surprisingly sparsely populated. This vastness can be felt in the unspoilt nature, the deep forests, clear lakes and the omnipresent tranquillity.

Four seasons with character

In summer, the sun shines almost endlessly, especially around midsummer, when the north does not even get dark. In Kiruna, north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set for days – pure midnight sun!

In winter, the contrast is striking: long nights, lots of darkness and magical light when snow bathes the landscape in soft white. Autumn and spring are intense, golden, clear and vibrant.

Nature & lifestyle

Sweden is a country of nature lovers. Hiking, picking berries, gathering mushrooms: these are not trends here, but part of everyday life. Recycling is a matter of course. Access to nature is enshrined in law: Allemansrätten – the right of public access – allows everyone to move freely in nature.

Culture between tradition and pop

From traditional midsummer festivals to the modern art scene: Sweden combines folklore with avant-garde. The music scene produces global hits, while old customs remain alive in small towns.

Culinary famous for köttbullar, smörgåsbord and gravad lax, Sweden now surprises with fresh, sustainable cuisine from the forest, sea and wild herbs.

The people and their stories

Around 90% of the population lives in the south – around a fifth in the metropolitan areas of Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala alone. The rest of the country remains vast, green – and quiet.

An important part of Sweden are the Sámi, the indigenous people of the north. In Sápmi, the traditional Sámi land, around 20,000 Sámi live in Sweden today, with their own language, culture and history deeply rooted in the region.

A history with weight

Sweden's past is anything but peaceful: Viking raids, campaigns under Gustav II Adolf and Charles XII, a former empire in the Baltic region. But since 1814, the country has been neutral and living in peace; today, Sweden stands for stability, social justice and international cooperation.

Sweden is a country of contrasts – geographically, culturally and historically.

Between the midnight sun and the polar night, between folk festivals and art biennials, between silence and pop music – Sweden remains surprising and independent.
