Cambodia

Cambodia has much more to offer than just the Angkor Wat, such as Battambang, the charming city in French colonial style, or the capital Phnom Penh, which scores with its nightlife and its inexpensive but still excellent restaurants in addition to the sights. For a relaxing beach holiday, the coastal town of Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand with its long sandy beach is the place to go.

Capital: Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, is located in the centre of the country, at the confluence of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers - a strategic location chosen as the capital after the decline of Angkor. Phnom Penh has endured the centuries and developed through all eras that have influenced Cambodia, positively or negatively. During the French protectorate, many colonial buildings were constructed, such as the National Library, the Central Market, the Royal Palace and the National Museum. During the Khmer Rouge period, many buildings were abandoned and others, such as S21 and the Killing Fields, were converted into Khmer Rouge quarters.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is located in the northwest of the country, in the province of the same name. Siem Reap is known for its proximity to Cambodia's most important archaeological site: the Angkor complex. Since the 1990s, when the Angkor complex was declared the 8th wonder of the world, Siem Reap, which was hardly accessible at the time, has undergone rapid development and has become the country's tourist centre, receiving several million visitors every year.
